Stonehenge

When you think about family days out in the south-west, Stonehenge immediately springs to mind.

It is believed the positioning of the Stone Circle centrepiece, with its stones which weigh more than 50 tonnes a piece, began more than 5,000 years ago and was then remodelled several times over the following 1,500 years. It's considered an engineering masterpiece.

But Stonehenge is much more than just a few rocks. The World Heritage Site also allows visitors to look around five Neolithic houses, depicting what those who built the Stone Circle would have lived in and their lifestyles. There are also several exhibitions on-site, providing a fascinating insight into Stonehenge, archaeological treasures and hands-on experiences.

Stonehenge Cafe is a great spot to rest your legs after wandering around the site and Visitor Centre, while there are plenty more things to do for great days out local as well, including Salisbury and Wiltshire Museums, Old Sarum and the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury.

Parking on-site is plentiful, although there may be a charge during peak-times for non-members and those without pre-booked tickets. A bus will then transport you from the Visitor Centre to the Stones.
