About Old Mission Santa Barbara

Old Mission Santa Barbara, established in 1786 and the only California mission under continuous Franciscan guidance since its founding, invites self-guided tours through its Mission Museum where visitors examine artifacts and explore the site's history. The grounds span about 15 acres and include historic gardens, a cemetery, and a mausoleum serving as a serene sanctuary for remembrance. The Serra Gift Shop offers spiritual and religious items, while the Mission Church hosts morning, afternoon, and weekend Masses through Saint Barbara Parish. Franciscan Friars maintain a continuous community presence, and the Mission Archive-Library and a Novitiate for Friars in training operate on the property. The site suits families, history enthusiasts, and those seeking spiritual reflection.
