About Manzanar National Historic Site

Manzanar National Historic Site preserves the history of a Japanese American incarceration camp that operated during World War II. Visitors explore the site through self-guided tours, walking, biking, or driving the 3.2-mile auto tour road. The visitor center features exhibits and screens the 22-minute film Remembering Manzanar. Block 14 contains replica buildings open daily, including two barracks, a women's latrine, and a mess hall with interpretive exhibits. The auto tour passes the Japanese Gardens, cemetery monument, and historic orchards. Families and individuals interested in American history, civil rights, and personal stories of incarcerated people find meaningful experiences here. Visitors can speak with rangers at the visitor center desk and explore educational materials onsite. Located in Independence in California's Owens Valley, Manzanar welcomes those seeking to understand this important chapter of American history through direct engagement with the preserved landscape and structures.
