About Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park

Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park preserves a working grain mill built in 1846 by Dr. Edward Turner Bale, one of only a handful of mills of its kind still functioning in the United States. Visitors tour the mill and watch milling demonstrations that show how the waterwheel powered the grinding of grain into meal and flour for early Napa Valley settlers. The park also contains the first church founded in the Napa Valley and a historic Pioneer Cemetery. Hiking trails wind through the grounds, with some accessible to visitors with mobility needs. Educational activities and special events celebrate the region's rural heritage. The mill itself is ADA accessible. Parking, restrooms, and drinking water are available on site. The park is located in St Helena, California, and operates on weekends. Visitors should stay on designated trails and respect all historic sites and structures within the park.
