About Forestiere Underground Gardens

Forestiere Underground Gardens is a historic landmark in Fresno where visitors take guided tours through underground rooms, tunnels, a chapel, an aquarium, and courtyards hand-excavated by Baldassare Forestiere using only a pickax and shovel during the early 1900s. Over 40 years, Forestiere carved out 10 acres of subterranean space to create his home and experiment with underground farming. The site functions as an open-air museum where guided tours last approximately one hour and welcome all ages. Visitors explore the distinctive architecture and layout of the underground chambers while learning about Forestiere's vision and the historical significance of his work. The gardens also feature a gift shop offering apparel, souvenirs, and handcrafted items by local artisans. Tours are conducted by reservation, with tickets sold online through the venue's website.
