About The Living Museum

The Living Museum is an art studio in Queens where visitors view and purchase artwork created by over 70 artists who are patients at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, the largest state psychiatric care center in New York City. The museum holds the largest collection of outsider art in the United States. Founded in 1983 by psychologist Dr. Janos Marton and Polish artist Bolek Greczynski, it occupies a transformed building on the Creedmoor grounds. The current director, Dr. Mitra Reyhani Ghadim, curates exhibitions and mentors the participating artists. Visitors explore galleries displaying work by these artists and can attend programs and classes offered at the studio. The museum functions as both a working studio where artists create daily and an exhibition space where their finished pieces are displayed. A visit suits anyone interested in outsider art, the creative process, and the intersection of mental health and artistic expression.
