About Walt Whitman Birthplace Association

Walt Whitman Birthplace Association preserves the Federal-style farmhouse where the acclaimed American poet was born in 1819. Visitors tour the restored home and adjacent Interpretive Center to learn about Whitman's life and literary legacy. The grounds include a one-acre site with a Poetry Circle featuring commemorative bricks and benches. The Association hosts monthly poetry readings, including marathon readings of Whitman's masterwork Leaves of Grass. A Poet-in-Residence program brings nationally recognized writers who conduct public readings and master writing classes. The annual student poetry contest receives thousands of entries and culminates in the Walt Whitman Birthday Celebration. Educational programs serve nearly a third of the site's annual visitors from grades three through twelve. The birthplace is located in Huntington Station, New York, and operates in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
