Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow is a mill and trading complex that reveals the lives of enslaved people who labored there for generations. Visitors cross the millpond bridge to tour the gristmill, where they learn about Caesar, an enslaved miller whose expertise enriched the Philipse family. The Manor House contains a cellar dairy where enslaved women named Dina, Massey, and Sue operated commercial butter production. Guided tours led by costumed educators take approximately one hour and forty-five minutes, visiting the mill, manor house, activity center, and barn with hands-on demonstrations throughout. Self-guided tours allow visitors to explore at their own pace and participate in different hands-on activities. The site documents primary sources revealing the family relationships and personal histories of the enslaved community, showing how they maintained cultural heritage and expressed their humanity despite the inhumane system that bound them.
