About Mount Gulian Historic Site
Mount Gulian Historic Site in Beacon, New York preserves an 18th-century home, Dutch barn, and heritage garden where visitors take guided tours to learn the property's history. Tours cover Mount Gulian's role as General Von Steuben's Revolutionary War headquarters, the founding of the Society of the Cincinnati, America's oldest veterans' organization, and generations of the Verplanck family. Visitors discover stories of James F. Brown, an enslaved man who escaped to freedom, and Robert Newlin Verplanck's service as an officer in the US Colored Troops during the Civil War. Artifacts on display span from the 18th through 20th centuries and include antique books, furniture, and Revolutionary War items. School and group programs teach young people about colonial life, Dutch settlers and Native American trade, and soldiers' experiences during the Revolutionary War. White Glove Tours allow advance groups to handle artifacts while wearing curatorial gloves. General tours run on set weekdays and Sundays with multiple time slots available.
