About Sherwood Jayne House

Sherwood Jayne House is a colonial-era farmstead where visitors tour period rooms furnished with antiques and view original late eighteenth-century hand-painted floral wall frescoes. Built around 1730 as a lean-to salt box dwelling, the house was restored by prominent architect Joseph Everett Chandler and now showcases the collections of Preservation Long Island's founder. The property encompasses hayfields, meadows, woodlot, orchard, and pasture that maintain its nineteenth-century agricultural character. Visitors can walk the grounds from dawn to dusk, exploring outbuildings and the landscape via self-guided tour. A three-mile nature trail on adjacent Suffolk County parkland invites hikers, joggers, and bird watchers to observe local wildlife including red-tailed hawks, red fox, flying squirrels, eastern box turtles, great horned owls, gray catbirds, and downy woodpeckers. Seasonal house tours are available by appointment. The site is located in Setauket–East Setauket, New York.
