About Old Economy Village Visitor Center

Old Economy Village Visitor Center preserves a National Historic Landmark in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, 18 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The site documents the Harmony Society, a 19th-century religious communal group founded by George Rapp. Visitors start at the Visitor Center with a 13-minute orientation video and two exhibit galleries, then walk or drive two blocks to explore 17 historic buildings and grounds at the main site. The village features George Rapp's Great Garden, a four-acre formal garden laid out in a cross pattern with biblical symbolism, including fruiting trees, roses, lilies, and a pavilion surrounding a pond with a statue of Harmony. The grounds also display the Grotto, a stone structure built in Rapp's memory, and traditional German-style grape trellises. Docent-led tours lasting one hour depart throughout the day, while other areas are self-guided. A typical visit spans about 30 minutes at the Visitor Center plus two hours exploring the site. The venue charges admission and sells tickets online through its website.
