The Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles educates visitors of all ages about the arts through the lens of African American culture. Founded by Dr. Samella Lewis in 1976, the nonprofit offers free admission and serves as a community gathering space for students, families, and lifelong learners. The museum's exhibit space, located on the second floor of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, features selected works from the permanent collection. MAAA hosts exhibitions and events aligned with its founding principle that art should be part of daily life. The museum continues digitizing its archives and institutional records, uncovering documents and photos from its early years that chronicle relationships between founder Dr. Samella Lewis and other artists, supporting research by students, researchers, curators, and documentary filmmakers.
