About Maytown Historical Society

Maytown Historical Society develops and maintains a written history of Maytown and East Donegal Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Visitors explore documents, artifacts and mementos that exemplify historical lifestyles and events of significance to the region. The society preserves family photographs, diaries, deeds and maps contributed by citizens, businesses, schools, churches and community organizations. The Museum House serves as a permanent site displaying the society's collections and loaned materials. Visitors learn about Maytown's founding in 1760 by German Mennonite land speculators Jacob and Elizabeth Downer, its role in Lancaster County history, and the architectural heritage of the area. Staff research, classify and document information on historic buildings to promote their preservation and restoration. Programs and events present information and education to members and the general public about local and regional history. The society advocates for government policies protecting historic buildings, farmland and community character throughout the township.
