The 1719 Museum in Lancaster County explores the interconnected histories of early Mennonite immigrants and Indigenous peoples in 18th-century Pennsylvania. Visitors tour the Herr House, the oldest surviving homestead in Lancaster County, built with sandstone quarried on-site. The Lancaster Longhouse exhibit focuses on the rich history of Eastern Woodland Indigenous tribes that lived in south-central Pennsylvania. The museum teaches how Indigenous peoples instructed Mennonites in hunting game, clearing forested land, and identifying native plants. An annual Maize and Snitz Fest features historical demonstrations and local food vendors. School groups can arrange field trips to build curriculum through immersive experiences at the museum.
