About Columbia Historic Preservation Society

Columbia Historic Preservation Society occupies the original English Evangelical Lutheran Church building in Columbia, Lancaster County. Visitors explore exhibits dedicated to preserving the history of this rivertown, formerly known as Wright's Ferry and Shawana Town. During the nation's founding, Columbia was seriously considered as a possible site for the new capital and later served as the Gateway to the American West due to its position on the Susquehanna River and importance as a rail hub. The society is housed in the historic church and the adjacent Old Manse, designed by celebrated Lancaster architect Cassius Emlen Urban. The organization holds monthly meetings open to the community and welcomes volunteer participation. A visit suits anyone interested in local and early American history.
