About Northern Central Railway

Northern Central Railway operates excursion train rides through Southern York County from its depot in New Freedom, Pennsylvania. Visitors board historic coaches pulled by either a replica 1860s steam locomotive or a GP9 diesel engine for journeys through scenic farmland and forest. The railway offers themed excursions where passengers can meet costumed characters including cowboys, presidents, and princesses. The Overland Trail Pullman car, a 1949 lounge car, features plush seating and a bar for those seeking a more luxurious experience. Some rides include box lunches and narrated tours of local history. The railway also operates Rail Bikes Adventures excursions along the same line. For younger visitors, STEAM Ahead Summer Camp combines educational programming with train rides. Weekend excursions run regularly, with various routes passing through stops including Railroad, Glen Rock, Hanover Junction, and the historic Howard Tunnel. Tickets are sold online on the railway's website.
