About Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad

Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad operates tourist passenger train service along a historic 7-mile line connecting its namesake boroughs. Visitors ride vintage rail equipment pulled by a 1955 General Electric diesel locomotive or occasionally a 1956 or 1969 Alco diesel-electric locomotive. The railroad's collection includes multiple trolley cars dating from 1903 to 1945, sourced from cities including Philadelphia. Passenger coaches and combines built by Pullman Standard between 1916 and 1920 carry riders along the route. The roster also features a 1925 Pullman sleeper car called the Orange State, along with freight cars including a Pacific Fruit Express reefer boxcar. The railroad traces its origins to 1888, when local businessmen formed the company. The current operator has provided tourist service since 1986, offering visitors the experience of riding restored historical rail cars through the landscape between the two boroughs.
