About Middletown Area Historical Society
Middletown Area Historical Society collects, preserves, and teaches the history of Middletown and surrounding Dauphin County areas through its museum and historic properties. Visitors explore the Middletown Historic Museum, housed in a building at the society's main location, where exhibits cover local heritage. The society also oversees the Swatara Ferry House, a National Historic Places-listed log structure dating to around 1820 that once served ferry traffic on the Swatara Creek. The building is architecturally significant as the sole known survivor of its type in Dauphin County. Adjacent to the Ferry House stands the Liberty Band Hall, originally a church moved to its present location between 1913 and 1916, which belonged to the Liberty Band ensemble. The society operates entirely through volunteer Trustees and staff dedicated to sharing Middletown's history, which dates to 1755 as the oldest town in Dauphin County. Located in Middletown, Pennsylvania, the museum welcomes visitors of all ages interested in local history.
