The Marian Anderson Historical Residence Museum in Philadelphia documents the life and legacy of the renowned opera singer. Visitors tour the 19th-century house in Center City West, a National Historic Landmark declared by Pennsylvania and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Anderson purchased the home in 1924 and transformed the basement into an entertainment space featuring a piano, portable bar stocked with champagne and water, and furnishings where she entertained fellow musicians during breaks from world tours. The museum displays rare photographs, books, memorabilia and films about Anderson's remarkable career. The Marian Anderson Historical Society changes its exhibition theme annually, offering new perspectives on her life and artistry. The organization supports the Marian Anderson Scholar Artist Program, which nurtures young classical singers, opera performers, instrumentalists and visual artists ages 18 and up through a season of shows and events. Group tours are available by appointment.
