The Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society and Museum preserves the history of the Lake Ronkonkoma area through vintage photographs and historical items donated by local residents. Visitors explore the museum's large collection housed in the restored 1916 Ronkonkoma Free Library building on Hawkins Avenue. The society also operates the Fitz-Greene Hallock Homestead, built in 1888 and known as "The Maples," located on Pond Road. This three-story house remains a time capsule of late 1800s Long Island family life, furnished with all original pieces including period furnishings throughout. The homestead features an octagon barn and outbuildings such as a chicken coop and ice house. The museum offers tours and hosts historical programs for school groups, scout groups, and senior groups, with presentations available at other locations. Historical Society members receive special behind-the-scenes access on tour days. The facilities are open Saturdays or by appointment in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York.
