About Fire Island Lighthouse
Fire Island Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in New York State, sits in Fire Island within Fire Island National Seashore. Visitors climb 182 steps to the tower's top for 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean, bays, and the Manhattan skyline. The site includes multiple museums with exhibits spread across several buildings. The Keeper's Quarters displays two floors of interactive exhibits about lighthouse keepers' lives and the preservation effort that saved the structure. The Lens Building houses the historic First Order Fresnel Lens used in the tower from 1858 to 1933. The Boathouse contains an authentic Surf Boat and lifesaving equipment from the late 1800s and early 1900s, plus wreckage possibly from the ship Savannah. Scenic boardwalk nature trails wind through the surrounding landscape. School groups participate in educational programs featuring tower climbs, United States Life Saving Service lectures, and nature walks. Scout groups can reserve guided tower tours on weekend mornings.
