About Fire Island Lighthouse

Fire Island Lighthouse preserves the tallest lighthouse in New York State, where visitors climb 182 steps to the top for 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean, Fire Island National Seashore, Long Island's bays, and the Manhattan skyline. The site includes the Keeper's Quarters with two floors of interactive exhibits about lighthouse keepers' lives, a Lens Building displaying the First Order Fresnel Lens that operated from 1858 to 1933, and a Boathouse with an authentic Surf Boat and lifesaving equipment from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Visitors also see wreckage possibly from the ship Savannah. The museum and gift shop open daily; the tower operates weekends, with weekday hours available by calling ahead. Programs include tower tours, school groups with educational segments on the US Life Saving Service and nature walks, scout group visits, and special sunset tours. Active military personnel receive free tower access with ID at fireislandlighthouse.org.
