About Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary

Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary is a 785-acre preserve in Lakeside owned and maintained by San Diego Bird Alliance. The sanctuary protects coastal chaparral and riparian woodland habitat and welcomes visitors for hiking, guided walks, bird watching, and passive research. Approximately five miles of trails wind through the grounds for exploration. The sanctuary has recorded over 324 native plant species and 124 bird species, along with numerous reptile and mammal species including mule deer, bobcat, and raccoon. An observation area located one-third mile from the parking lot features shaded picnic tables and benches for viewing birds and small mammals. Those with physical limitations may drive to this area. The sanctuary provides self-contained toilets at the parking lot and observation area, a drinking fountain at the observation area, and picnic areas at the Nature Center. Wildflowers bloom profusely in winter and spring, while spring attracts breeding birds including bluebirds, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, flycatchers, and songbirds.
