The Water Conservation Garden features the Dorcas E. Utter Memorial Butterfly Pavilion, a Victorian-inspired glass structure showcasing native Southern California butterflies and drought-tolerant nectar flowers that support them. Across nearly six acres in El Cajon, the garden displays themed exhibition spaces including a Native Habitat Garden that demonstrates plant community design, a Backyard Makeover exhibit comparing water use before and after redesign, and a Bird and Butterfly Garden with seating for observing pollinators. Visitors explore how-to displays covering mulch and irrigation, and stroll among drought-tolerant plants from around the world. The garden functions as a learning laboratory for serious gardeners and a casual destination for afternoon walks. Weekly classes and workshops teach water-wise gardening techniques. An outdoor Amphitheater hosts performances and events surrounded by drought-tolerant pine trees. Children ages two and under receive free admission.
