The Olaf Wieghorst Museum & Western Heritage Center in El Cajon houses the art collection of Danish-American painter Olaf Wieghorst, recognized among the top ten Western art museums in the United States. Visitors explore the Heritage Center Museum galleries displaying Wieghorst's magnificent paintings of nineteenth-century American West scenes, including portrayals of cowboys, Native American Indians, and settlers. Wieghorst immigrated to the U.S. as a Danish teenager in 1918 with minimal English and limited resources, yet became an internationally recognized painter dedicated to documenting the cowboy era and American Western landscape through his canvases.
