Roaring Camp in Felton operates narrow-gauge steam train excursions through the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Redwood Forest Steam Train carries passengers over trestles and through towering redwood groves on a 75-minute journey to Bear Mountain's summit, with conductors narrating the region's logging history. The steam engines, dating from 1890, rank among America's oldest and most authentically preserved narrow-gauge locomotives still providing regularly scheduled passenger service. The Santa Cruz Beach Train departs on weekends, traveling through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, down the San Lorenzo River Gorge, across a 1909 steel truss bridge and through an 1875 tunnel before reaching the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Roaring Camp also offers Sequoias at Night, an intimate art and light installation featuring giant illuminated lanterns suspended overhead among thousand-year-old redwoods. This lighted stroll covers approximately 0.8 miles and welcomes all ages, with children accompanying adults and well-behaved leashed dogs permitted. The attraction suits families and visitors seeking scenic train rides and forest experiences in California's redwood country.
