Pennhurst Asylum, Spring City

About Pennhurst Asylum

Pennhurst Asylum in Spring City offers daytime history tours and photography experiences centered on the former Pennhurst State School campus. Professional guides lead three-hour tours through the grounds, visiting the exteriors of sixteen Lower Campus buildings while sharing stories about the structures and the people who lived and worked there. Visitors witness preserved artifacts and hear accounts from former employees. The site was pivotal to the Disability Rights Movement, and tours address this significant history in an uncensored way that may be emotionally challenging for some guests. A photography tour allows visitors to photograph the abandoned campus and its remediated buildings, many of which remain striking architectural subjects despite decades of abandonment. Tours are designed for guests approaching the material with an open and respectful mind. The attraction operates in Spring City, Pennsylvania.
