About David Weld Sanctuary

David Weld Sanctuary is a 125-acre nature preserve where visitors hike trails through diverse habitats shaped by glacial geology. The 3-mile trail crosses an old field dotted with red cedars, loops around a red maple swamp, and passes colossal tulip trees before climbing a 50-foot bluff that overlooks Long Island Sound. Hikers encounter a kettle hole, a 60-foot-deep depression formed when a massive block of glacial ice melted in place, along with enormous boulders scattered throughout the woods and along 1,800 feet of beachfront. The sanctuary suits birders, geology enthusiasts, and wildflower lovers seeking accessible hiking with enough elevation change to remain interesting without being strenuous. The trails accommodate family nature walks and exploration from dawn to dusk. A small parking lot serves about six vehicles. The preserve is located in Saint James on Long Island's North Shore.
