About Washington Township Museum of Local History
Washington Township Museum of Local History in Fremont explores the region's past through exhibits, tours, and community programs. Visitors can take guided museum tours or explore Rancho Higuera Historical Park, a historic adobe site. The museum offers self-guided walking tours along Ellsworth Street, which highlights buildings that once stood in Mission San Jose. Special projects include Tri-City Treasures, a historical map with backstories about landmarks, geographic features, plants, and animals that shaped the Fremont, Newark, and Union City landscape. The museum also produced Fremont Sounds Like, an oral history podcast featuring recordings from the San Francisco Bay Area's largest suburb. School groups participate in museum tours and Rancho Higuera Historical Park tours with preparation materials and guidelines provided. Seasonal walking tours explore neighborhoods including Alvarado, Old Town Newark, Niles, Irvington, Decoto, and Palmdale Gardens, led by local historians.
