About Stony Brook Grist Mill

Stony Brook Grist Mill is a historic mill dating to 1751 that visitors explore as part of the Ward Melville Heritage Organization's collection of preserved landmarks in Stony Brook. The mill is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Families visit to learn about the region's colonial history and see the restored structure that represents the area's industrial heritage. The organization offers school field trips where students engage with the mill's history through educational programming designed for classroom groups. Adult programs and virtual field trips extend learning opportunities beyond in-person visits for those unable to travel. The mill sits within Stony Brook's preserved village district, surrounded by other historic properties including the Brewster House and Thompson House, also maintained by the heritage organization. Visitors experience the site within the context of Ward Melville's vision to create a living historical village that showcases Long Island's colonial past.
