The Society of California Pioneers, established in 1850, preserves and presents early California history at its location in San Francisco's Yerba Buena neighborhood. The organization operates the Alice Phelan Sullivan Library, one of San Francisco's earliest libraries, where visitors and researchers access an extensive collection documenting the state's founding and development. The library holds over 7,000 books and 20,000 manuscripts and archival items, including maps, periodicals, and printed ephemera from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Notable holdings include the Sutter diary describing the discovery of gold, Peter Decker's overland journey diary, and collections of sheet music, playbills, and photographs. The archives chronicle the Spanish and Mexican eras, pioneer overland and maritime travels, the Gold Rush, mining ventures, railroad construction, and biographical information on early California settlers. A programming room hosts lectures and events related to the collection. Researchers work by appointment with materials documenting defining events including the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible and located in San Francisco, California.
