Poway Heritage Museum, located in Old Poway Park, preserves the history of Poway through exhibits, artifacts, documents and memorabilia spanning the town's evolution from isolated community to suburban center. The museum operates as a cooperative effort between the City of Poway and the Poway Historical and Memorial Society, which formed in 1964 when local residents known as "Old Powegians" sought to protect the area's heritage from being lost. Visitors explore the museum grounds and discover a working railroad running through the park, the Nelson House, a replica of a pioneer dwelling, and the I.O.G.T. Hall, built in 1881 by the Independent Order of Good Templars. A blacksmith shop and additional facilities stand throughout the grounds, maintained entirely by dedicated volunteers. The growing archive includes images, documents and period memorabilia documenting Poway's colorful past. The museum welcomes school children, researchers and interested individuals seeking to learn about local history. The facility is situated at Old Poway Park on Midland Road in Poway, California.
