About Mono Basin History Museum

The Mono Basin History Museum occupies the Old Schoolhouse in Lee Vining and displays artifacts chronicling the cultural history of the Mono Basin region. Visitors explore Native American artifacts, gold mining implements, photographs, books, maps and equipment spanning the area's past. The museum's centerpiece is the wheel from the Venita, a tour boat that operated on Mono Lake during the 1930s. Outside, the grounds feature Nellie Bly's Upside-Down House, a whimsical structure originally created in 1956 and inspired by children's stories. The property also displays historical farming and mining equipment. The Upside-Down House was relocated to the museum grounds in 2000 after falling into disrepair. The museum sits adjacent to Hess Park on Mattly Avenue behind the CalTrans yard in Lee Vining. A visit suits history enthusiasts and families interested in regional heritage and quirky local landmarks.
