About Lansingburgh Historical Soc

Lansingburgh Historical Soc occupies the Herman Melville House, a museum where visitors explore artifacts and furnishings from the village's past. The first-floor parlors display items from local historic homes, including a doll house, a letter box exchanged between the Melville and Gansevoort families, a book collection, and photographs, artwork, models, and tinware related to Lansingburgh people and industries. The third-floor attic houses a more extensive collection of artifacts from the brick, brush, and rope-making industries, along with street signs, toys, and tools. A fully furnished model of a Lansing House created by a founding member stands on display. Across First Avenue, Melville Park marks the former site of shipbuilding and a carpenter shop. The society, founded in 1965 to preserve local history, suits anyone interested in New England heritage and the community's industrial past. A visit involves self-guided exploration of the museum's rooms in Troy, New York.
