About Renascent Bookbindery

Renascent Bookbindery is a working 19th-century bookbindery museum where visitors participate in the operation of antique machines and discover the history of bookbinding and printing. Located in a historic brick building in downtown Troy, New York, the museum preserves Troy's industrial heritage through hands-on experience with the craft. During guided tours, visitors sew and trim books in 15th-century style, apply gold leaf to leather book covers, make printing type by hand, and operate an 1820s-style iron hand press. The second floor houses a library with an extensive collection of bookbinding books and artifacts, plus an online archive for research. Founded by bookbinder Tim James, the facility contains one of the largest collections of bookbinding literature and historical artifacts. Tours run approximately ninety minutes and are led by the founder. The museum occupies an industrial space with antique equipment lacking modern safety mechanisms, so adult supervision of children is required throughout visits.
