About Shaker Heritage Society

Shaker Heritage Society preserves and interprets America's first Shaker settlement at Watervliet in Albany, New York. Visitors explore nine historic Shaker buildings, a heritage herb garden, apple orchard, and the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve where the society founder is buried. The museum occupies an 1848 Shaker Meeting House with a gift shop. Guided tours and self-guided walks take families through the 770-acre historic district. The small-scale farm program features heritage breeds of turkeys, chickens, and oxen. Educational programs include school curricula meeting New York State Learning Standards, craft workshops, lectures, and activities for seniors. Craft fairs provide opportunities to learn about Shaker history and support local artisans. The grounds accommodate picnicking, hiking, and concerts. The venue also operates corporate retreat facilities.
