About Homewood Historical Society

The Homewood Historical Society operates the Dorband-Howe House Museum, an 1891 workingman's cottage built from locally stamped bricks in Homewood. Visitors explore rotating exhibits featuring local history displayed throughout the house. Current and recent exhibits cover a golf course along the Illinois Central Railroad, the history of the Homewood Police Department, a barbershop exhibit, and seasonal displays for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and winter holidays. The museum features an antique stereoscope and collections documenting the area's development from early settlement through the twentieth century. Volunteer staff members guide visitors through the museum. The society, founded in 1980, preserves the history of this community located south of Chicago. The museum opens on Saturday afternoons and welcomes anyone interested in learning about Homewood's past, from its railroad heritage to its development as a residential village.
