About American Writers Museum

The American Writers Museum explores how American writing has shaped the nation across more than four hundred years. Visitors engage with interactive exhibits including the Word Waterfall, where projected patriotic writings invite reflection, and the Chicago Gallery, which features audio and rotating panels about local writers. The Story of the Day station lets guests type stories on vintage typewriters, while the Surprise Bookshelf offers multisensory experiences with phrases and works by journalists, hip hop artists, and other writers. The Dark Testament exhibition focuses on Black writers and their fight against racial injustice during the eighteen hundreds and nineteen hundreds. Current exhibits explore the intersection of religion and writing through rare artifacts and creative works across literature, film, music, and comedy. The museum features a Children's Gallery for younger visitors and hosts public programs including the American Writers Festival and author talks. Located in downtown Chicago near Millennium Park, the museum operates Thursday through Monday and welcomes families, solo explorers, and curious minds of all ages.
