About Charles Gates Dawes House

Charles Gates Dawes House is a National Historic Landmark in Evanston that houses the Evanston History Center, where visitors tour a restored twenty-five-room chateauesque mansion and explore exhibitions about local history. The 1894 residence features a cherry-paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians' gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces. Visitors can take self-guided house tours or join one-hour docent-led tours. The Research Room provides access to more than 100,000 artifacts including decorative arts, rare books, documents, maps, photographs, oral histories, and a nationally renowned Costume Collection. Themed tours covering the arts, architecture, and technological change are available for groups of eight or more with advance reservation. The center also offers free public programming and docent-led walking tours of historical Evanston neighborhoods. The attraction suits anyone interested in local history, architecture, and community heritage. House tours and exhibitions are available Thursday through Sunday, and the Research Room operates on select weekdays and Saturday afternoons.
