The Torrance Historical Society and Museum, founded in 1973 and opened in 1979, occupies the historic Post Avenue Library building constructed in 1936. Visitors explore permanent exhibits along with changing exhibits that vary throughout the year. The museum's ever-increasing collection includes local history records, data, photographs, and oral histories documenting Torrance and the San Pedro Rancho. The Society maintains a state-of-the-art archive preserving documents and information bearing on the city's past. Beyond the museum itself, the Torrance Historical Society promotes local history through its Plaque Program, which has placed bronze plaques on significant historic landmarks throughout the community for the past twenty years. The organization actively promotes interest in and education about Torrance history while supporting historical research.
