About The Country Doctor Museum

The Country Doctor Museum in Bailey interprets the history of rural American medicine through guided tours of multiple buildings on its campus. Visitors walk through the Farmer Annex, which houses a nursing exhibit and gift shop, then move to the Freeman-Brantley building to see a period apothecary, doctor's office, and sick room. The Carriage House displays transportation artifacts and a polio exhibit. During spring and summer, the museum's medicinal garden becomes part of the tour route. All tours run approximately 45 to 60 minutes and are led by docents who encourage questions about nineteenth and twentieth-century rural health care. The museum welcomes school groups, homeschool groups, civic organizations, and other visitors seeking to learn about how Americans received medical care before modern hospitals became widespread. The facility offers ADA-accessible buildings, handicap parking, restrooms with a baby changing station, and picnic tables under a covered shelter.
