About Cowan Museum of History and Science

The Cowan Museum of History and Science in Kenansville preserves 19th and 20th century tools, technology, household artifacts, medical devices, and geological specimens within the historic Kelly-Farrior House. The collection of 4,300 objects includes woodworking tools, gardening implements, agricultural equipment, craft items, and unique pieces such as a 1930s permanent wave machine and a hog oiler. An adjacent historical park features six buildings: a log cabin, general store, and tobacco barn. The grounds include the Joann Cowan Brown Botanical Garden, a free native-plant landscape with approximately 90 species, pollinator gardens, a wet meadow garden, a Longleaf Pine upland garden, and a Bald Cypress wetland garden open 24 hours daily. General admission is free. Most exhibits are self-guided, though staff members answer questions about artifacts and geology specimens. Group tours are available with advance notice.
