About Grifton Museum

The Grifton Museum occupies a brick building in Grifton, North Carolina, that once served as a Methodist Church and later as a school. Visitors explore exhibits covering American Indian artifacts, an Indian Village across the street, Civil War maps and artifacts, and information about John Lawson, North Carolina's first Surveyor-General and his regional significance. The museum displays tools, office and shop equipment, home furnishings, textiles, and toys that chronicle local heritage. Exhibits also explain the historical importance of the Contentnea Creek to the area's development. The museum hosts educational programs and workshops designed to engage visitors of all ages. The building itself reflects local history, having housed the Winterville Ayden Grifton Child Development Center and an Eastern Regional Education Center after school integration. The museum operates on select Sundays and welcomes groups and individuals by appointment.
