About New Bern Firemen's Museum

New Bern Firemen's Museum preserves the history of firefighting in New Bern through hands-on exhibits and authentic memorabilia. Visitors tour the museum to learn about the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, established in 1845 as the oldest chartered fire company in North Carolina, and the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1, later known as the Button Company. The museum features displays about the Great Fire of 1922, which destroyed over 1,000 buildings downtown. A highlight for many visitors is meeting Fred, the museum's famous fire horse who once pulled the hose wagon for the Atlantic Company. The collection includes artifacts from both companies, which merged in 1928. The museum operates Wednesday through Saturday with experienced volunteer guides leading tours. School groups and families visit for educational programming about local fire department history. Located two blocks from Tryon Palace in New Bern, the museum is suited for children and adults interested in regional heritage and firefighting traditions.
