About N.C. Transportation Museum

The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer explores the state's railroad, automotive, and aviation heritage across a 60-acre historic site. Visitors tour the 1898 Barber Junction Depot visitor center, the Bob Julian Roundhouse—the largest remaining roundhouse in North America—and the Back Shop, which displays locomotives, railcars, antique automobiles, fire trucks, and a full-size Wright Flyer replica. The Flue Shop features the Bumper to Bumper auto exhibit, while the Wheel Balance Shed, one of only two known to exist in the United States, showcases how steam locomotive wheels were balanced. Seasonal train rides pulled by vintage diesel locomotives circle the property for approximately 25 minutes. The museum suits families, school groups, scouts, and senior groups, many of whom participate in hands-on activity stations exploring land, air, and water transportation. Group tours and summer-themed activity days accommodate various interests and ages.
