About Davidson County Historical Museum

The Davidson County Historical Museum occupies the Old Davidson County Courthouse, a Greek Italianate Revival building completed in 1858 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors explore permanent and rotating exhibits showcasing material culture spanning 12,000 years of Davidson County history. The museum's collections include thousands of artifacts, images, and archival materials. Inside the courthouse, historic features remain intact, including the courtroom bar, judge's bench, jury box, and holding cell. Exhibits offer hands-on opportunities to learn and play, engaging visitors of all ages. The museum's permanent collection and changing displays highlight local history topics ranging from Lexington-style barbecue to Buffalo Bill's 1901 train wreck and Civil War history. Walk-in visits are welcome, and field trips are available. The museum is located in the heart of Uptown Lexington's Historic District. Admission is free.
