About Josephus W. Hall House
The Dr. Josephus Hall House, built in 1820, operates as a museum in Salisbury where visitors take docent-guided tours through a restored Southern residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guests examine original furnishings, wallpapers, and painted ceilings throughout the home, along with a desk used by Andrew Jackson during his law studies in Salisbury in the 1780s. The grounds include a restored kitchen building from around 1825 where enslaved workers lived and worked, and a Civil War cannon once positioned at Salisbury's prison. The house began as classrooms for the Salisbury Female Academy before becoming a residence in 1825, then underwent transformation into a grand home when Dr. Josephus Hall purchased it in 1859. The Hall family occupied the property for four generations before the Historic Salisbury Foundation acquired it in 1972 with many original contents. Group tours and regular Saturday tours are available.
