About Lick Observatory

Lick Observatory sits atop Mt. Hamilton in California and welcomes visitors to the Shane Telescope Visitor Center and East Grounds. The observatory features multiple research telescopes including the Shane Telescope, Automated Planet Finder, Nickel Telescope, Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope, and Coudé Auxiliary Telescope. Historical instruments on display include the 36-inch Lick Refractor, Crossley Reflector, Carnegie Double Astrograph, and Tauchmann Telescope. Visitors explore exhibits on astronomy and historical resources related to the observatory's scientific work. The facility offers walking tours, private tours, and special events including eclipse expeditions focused on general relativity and starlight bending. A gift shop is available on the grounds. Group visits can be arranged, and the observatory hosts weddings and other private events. The East Grounds and Shane Gallery are open daily, providing access to these historic and active astronomical instruments.
