About African American Museum and Library at Oakland

The African American Museum and Library at Oakland preserves and shares the historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in California and the West. Visitors explore current exhibitions and browse the reference library's materials, which support the museum's archives. The seed library allows guests to borrow seeds during their visit. Self-guided tours require no reservation and can happen during regular hours. Group tours with AAMLO staff are available by advance reservation through the museum's contact line. The archival collection contains over 160 individual collections documenting the lives of families, pioneers, churches, and social and political organizations in Northern California and the Bay Area. Archival materials may be viewed in person by appointment or accessed online through Calisphere. Programs for visitors include the AAMLO Kids Club and exhibitions showcasing African American culture and history. The museum is located at 659 14th Street in Oakland.
