About Joliet Union Depot Tower Museum

The Joliet Railroad Museum occupies a former interlocking signal tower built around 1913, known locally as Union Depot Tower, now preserved within the Gateway Center Train Station. Visitors explore the railroad companies that operated through Joliet and examine the mechanisms and controls that coordinated train movement through this critical intersection of east-west and north-south rail lines. The museum tells the story of collaboration and engineering behind the 1910-1912 track realignment and elevation project that constructed the historic Joliet Union Station and Union Depot Tower. From the tower's third story, guests watch trains arrive and depart in all directions, a vantage point that has made Joliet known worldwide as the Railroad Capital in Trains Magazine. The museum operates as part of the Joliet Area Historical Museum and is ADA accessible. Parking is available in public lots surrounding the train station and on nearby streets. The Railroad Museum is located in Joliet, Illinois.
