About Joliet Iron Works Historic Site

Joliet Iron Works Historic Site is a 52-acre preserve in Joliet featuring remnants of the region's former iron manufacturing facility set along the Des Plaines River. Visitors explore the site on a 0.59-mile paved trail that offers a self-guided interpretive tour highlighting the historical significance of the ironworks. The preserve connects to the 7.57-mile I&M Canal Trail, which accommodates hiking, running, biking, in-line skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The natural areas surrounding the historic site support diverse plant and animal species typical of river corridors in Will County, with birds and wildlife present throughout the year. A shelter accommodates picnicking for groups. The site sits minutes from downtown Joliet and represents an important link to the city's industrial heritage as a center of steel and stone manufacturing.
